Festival of our Lady of Regnos Altos

Festival of our Lady of Regnos Altos

The festival is thought to date back to 1847, when a child found a wooden statue from the Middle Ages of the Madonna in the rubble of the Malaspina Castle.

The statuette was called Our Lady of Regnos Altos and was displayed for the people to worship in the church of St. Andrew which, inside the castle. The news of this statuette spread throughout the town and people came from far and wiode to worship the Virgin Mary. Since then, the statue is kept in a small alcove in the church inside the castle. The Church of Our Lady of Regnos Altos, considered by scholars to date back prior to the construction of the castle (XIII century), is of great historical and artistic interest. More recently, in 1973, frescoes of very great value were accidentally discovered during some restoration work under a layer of lime.

These have now been restored by the Superintendent of Sassari, and are attributed to the Judicial age.
The festival in the early decades of the century took place in the castle and the echo of the improvised choir (gosos) singing on the parade ground, in praise of the Virgin Mary, resonated around the medieval district of Sa Costa.

The celebration of Our Lady of Regnos Altos falls on the Saturday and Sunday of the second week of September. This is certainly one of the most anticipated events by Bosa, not only for the religious aspect, but also for fun, celebratory, party atmosphere.

The procession with the Virgin Mary is accompanied by the Brotherhood and folk groups and follows a path that winds between the castle and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, through the medieval district of Sa Costa.
A few days before Regnos Altos the men of the town adorn the hill and the streets with twigs, reeds and flags.

On Saturday afternoon, the Women place small altars with the precious Madonna and decorated with flowers and their best threaded lace, embroidered by themselves. These are placed in the alleys, the caves and in other open spaces of the district of Sa Costa, a sign of devotion to the Madonna. The vigil and prayers are accompanied by the playfulness of the outdoor tables and selling of wine, Malvasia and simple food products (fae a landinu, azzada, snails …), which are cooked for the occasion.
